I understand R. Kelly recorded a tribute song to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. It's called "I Know You Are Hurting (Tribute to the Newtown, CT Kids)". Will it ever be released on one of his upcoming albums?188.8.131.52 (talk) 06:15, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
Is there somewhere where I could look up the title of a Jpop song from a short motif I know (not the words, only the melody)? I'm looking for a song with a piano accompaniment and a motif that goes something like do-do-do-re-mi-so. BankerK (talk) 06:32, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
English Solfège version: C C C D E G. A quick Google search turned up JapanChord where it looks like you can search for guitar chords and lyrics to Japanese songs, though searching for that sequence turned up no results, so perhaps it is not listed there. I also tried listening to it by playing a piano, but it didn't sound familiar. Winged watermelon (talk) 05:31, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
Update: after some further thinking I have a feeling that 1) that's the beginning of the song, and 2) the "full" version of that part is: E D C C C D E G. It's slow with female voice. I'll do some more searching... BankerK (talk) 01:58, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
Pertaining to the United States, I would be interested to know the best-selling films of all time on the three major formats: VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. Russell Ash's Top 10 of Film had this information, and in The Top 10 of Everything 2006 I remember the two best-selling DVDs ever were Finding Nemo and Shrek 2. The musician Harry Nilsson died in 1994, yet his recordings arearguably as relevant today as anytime during his ten-year career as amajor-label recording artist. born Harry Edward Nilsson III on June 15, 1941,in Brooklyn, New York, Nilsson--he was generally referred to simply by hislast name--made fourteen albums for RCA between 1967 and 1977. one of these,Nilsson Schmilsson (1971), is widely considered one of the major albums ofthe 1970s; it rose to number 3 on the billboard Pop Albums Chart and yieldedthree Top 40 singles, including the number 1 Grammy Award-winning"Without You." Three years earlier Nilsson had recorded anotherGrammy Award-winning single, "Everybody's Talkin'." Thosetwo hits--arguably Nilsson's best-known performances--were his versionsof songs by other songwriters. During the late 1960s and into the 1970s, manyperformers scored pop hits with their releases of songs originally composedby Nilsson (Three Dog Night, for instance, had a number 5 smash in 1969 withthe Nilsson-penned "One"). Widely considered a"musician's musician," Nilsson nonetheless acquired an avidfollowing, and many of the leading players in popular music during thatera--most notably the Beatles--spoke publically in praise of Nilsson.
The most emphatic sign of revived interest in Nilsson'smusic, however, could be witnessed in the dozens of film and televisionsoundtracks on which his recordings appeared. Since Nilsson's artisticreach was broad, his performances provided key thematic elements to a widerange of productions, from the romantic (You've Got Mail, BridgetJones's Diary) to the comedic (Seinfeld, Borat). That trend, of course, got underway during his lifetime: Nilsson's performance of"Everybody's Talkin'" empowered the Academy Award-winningfilm Midnight Cowboy (1969), and he wrote the music and lyrics for songs usedin the 1980 movie Popeye. And of course Nilsson composed the full soundtrackfor The Point. But even after his death, he was one of Hollywood's chiefgo-to songsmiths (alongside his friend and contemporary, singer-songwriterRandy Newman).
The RCA Albums Collection was released in July 2013, and that samemonth marked the issuance of the first full-length biography of the artist,Nilsson: The Life of a Singer Songwriter. Written by British jazz critic AlynShipton and published by Oxford University Press, that book provides detailedanalysis of Nilsson's motivations and deprivations, and is a valuablecomplement to the Sony Legacy box set. The year 2013 was dubbed "theYear of Nilsson" by serious fans and sympathetic music journalistsalike, but because his songs are remarkably varied and his recordingsartfully rendered, Nilsson will no doubt continue to be valued for years tocome. 2b1af7f3a8
